Every year brings new products and trends for use in home decor. Window treatments are certainly an important element to a room, and should not be taken for granted. At Spectrum, we specialize in creating Denver window treatments that not only enhance the look of a room, but will solve problems such as privacy, fading, and energy efficiency.

Because of the conscious efforts to become more green, consumers are trending toward materials that are more organic in nature. Woven wood shades and blinds in Denver are more popular than ever, offering a diffused lighting and interesting texture to a room. Made from grasses, bamboo, and other types of wood, these blinds add a textural depth to any window. The typically neutral colors work well in both traditional and modern interiors. The shades add a welcomed look of warmth to any setting.

Luxurious fabrics, such as silk, wool, velvet, and even suede are lavishing custom window treatments. While complicated drapery designs are not as popular now, these materials add a lushness for those who still crave a designer look. Embellishments are expected along with these fabrics, in the form of trims, beading, shimmering hardware, as well as unexpected shirring or pleating.

The simple texture of linen or silk will remain strong in the trends yet, but look out for bold shots of pattern and color to make a big pop this year. The color “mimosa” has been tagged as Pantone’s color of the year, an optimistic sunny yellow shade. This color will be dominant in textiles, and combined with literally any shade. It works as well with subtle grays as it does bright purples, greens, or blues. The trend toward larger scale florals will be everywhere, and these work well for window treatments that set the tone for a room. Overwhelming patterns can be calmed down by hiding them within pleats on side-panels, yet are welcome for a much needed statement on simple treatments such as roman shades. Large graphic trellis or geometric patterns will be everywhere, and are great for window framing panels.

Sheer window treatments allow the best of both worlds – privacy combined with light control. The new sheers are far from the old polyester Grandma had, offering playful textures, shimmer, color, and superior drape-ability. Sheers are being used as primary shades and panels for a chic, minimalist effect.

Perhaps one of the biggest trends in window fashions is the continued advent of technology. Companies such as Hunter Douglas have motorized almost every window shade available. Decorative hardware is now available to be hardwired or on battery operated controls. With the touch of a remote, light switch, or the internet, blinds, shades, and custom window treatments are easily opened and closed. Spectum Window Design carries a wide variety of Hunter Douglas products in Denver.

Often the details in a room are given so much consideration by a homeowner, that the obvious can be overlooked. Custom draperies are sometimes an afterthought to a room, when instead they can be used to set the tone. Given the amount of sunshine we get here, any window treatments in Denver need to be functional (shade and/or sun protection) while they enhance the décor. Traditional settings can rely on the use of drapes to be the more of a statement while contemporary interiors will use them more minimally.

One of the most important things a custom drapery treatment will do is add height to the ceiling, and compliment the window without overpowering it. They add a finished element that pulls the fabrics, colors, and furnishings together. Interior designers will stress to hang the drapes as high as possible in order to keep the ceiling looking tall, and walls wide. The width of the draperies can be specified to a luxurious fullness, which adds richness to the overall look.

Just as fullness should never be skimped on, neither should length. Drapes that are too short are like wearing high-water pants – they ruin the line. Shades and shutters need to fit the opening of the window to not show gaps of light and provide insulation when necessary.

Custom draperies and window treatments add to the personality of a room. They may be in the form of silky, light reflecting side panels, or lushly gathered swags. Larger panels or shades will show off prints better. The benefit of a custom treatment over ready-made drapes is that they fit the window the way they should, and will hang correctly. The look complements the room, and will not have a cookie cutter feel that ready-mades can project.

The overall intention of a window treatment should really be to “ice the cake” in the room. With regards to all the other fabrics used, a drapery can make a statement with a large print, or suggest subtle color with a solid. Trims such as fringes, tapes, bandings or cords create additional elements to the finished product and tie in colors. Decorative rods styles are important to the scheme. Custom draperies will use contrast linings to unify color, especially if seen from the outside.

Window treatments may combine elements of draperies with shades or sheers underneath. With regards to function, the shades will act as sun or privacy control as needed. They may be made of fabric in a roman style, woven woods, wood blinds, or cellular shades. If a fabric drape, valance, or swag is installed over the treatment, then the styles need to complement each other, as well as the overall interior. contact us to speak with our Denver drapes specialist who will be glad to visit you for a home consultation.

When looking to add warmth and elegance to a home, many go to wood as a design element. Windows in particular benefit from adding wood blinds or shutters. At Spectrum, we’ve been installing wooden shutters and blinds in Denver for years and understand both their aesthetic appeal and their functional advantages.

The advantage of these window treatments go beyond the function of privacy and sun protection. With so many products to choose from it may seem daunting, but it boils down to what suits the style of the home as well as its purpose.

Shutters
Shutters are still a time honored option for interiors, available in virtually any color or finish. Traditional shutters have small louvers, around 1 ½” or 2” wide, Plantation shutters are made with the larger louvers, typically 3”or wider, and have a cleaner, more contemporary look. Both offer insulation from heat and cold, light control, and are easy to clean.

Shutters are available in wood or faux wood styles, in painted or wood stains. Almost any room in the house can be enhanced by shutters. There are even styles to withstand humidity (not a big issue with Plantation Shutters in Denver), and custom shapes to fit odd windows. While more costly than most window treatments, they will add value to the home, and are the only window treatment to be considered a capital improvement by the IRS.

Shutters come in many variations to complement a wide style of windows. The openings can be split in half or in multiple panels vertically. The panels can also be split horizontally to allow the top and bottom to be independent of each other. Panels are hinged to allow for convenience in folding and stacking. While shutters can be a do-it-yourself project, good installation is key to the longevity of the product so that all panels are level and thoroughly attached.

Wood Blinds
If shutters do not fall into the budget, then wood blinds are an excellent alternative. Available in wood or faux styles, there are numerous finishes to choose from in paint or stain, as well as custom finishes. As with shutters, it is important to match the finish to the trim, creating consistency throughout the home. Wood blinds come in several slat sizes as well, ranging 1” – 2 ½” wide. A 2” slat is complementary to both traditional and modern interiors with a clean appearance and maximum light control.

Wooden blinds are also an excellent choice to add warmth and beauty to doors and windows. They can be mounted inside or outside the casing, and ordered in custom sizes for the best fit. They are available horizontally and vertically to allow for a number of hanging solutions. Like shutters, wood blinds will benefit any room in the house.

Either type of window treatment will work well individually or with the addition of soft window treatments. Valances, swags or simply panels can surround wood blinds easily, and add to their insulation capabilities. Shutters do not need heavy coverings over them, but are enhanced by the addition of color and pattern. When a room has numerous blinds or shutters, it is recommended to add some sort of fabric treatment to break up all the wood and soften the lines.

For more information, contact us to choose a product to fit the budget and style of your home. We offer some of the finest Hunter Douglas Products in Denver and will be happy to visit your home for a consultation. The addition will enhance the interior design of the home, and add value for many years to come.

Most of the energy lost from our homes literally goes out the windows. Therefore, the right window coverings can be a great way to help limit our losses. There is a wide range of window coverings available that are energy efficient – some better than others.

In the cold months of winter we are looking for a product with a high R-value. R-value measures a product’s resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the more insulation the product provides and the better it is at reducing heat loss.

In the summer we are looking to keep our homes from heating up throughout the day. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is the amount of solar heat that passes through a window, where 0 = none and 1 = all. The lower a product’s SHGC, the less solar heat it transmits, which can help a home stay cool in the hot summer months.

Hunter Douglas has developed a product that excels in both R-Value and SHGC, the Duette Architella Honeycomb Shade. The original honeycomb shades offered energy efficiency by creating a pocket of air. The Architella has improved on this design by adding a cell within a cell creating 3 air pockets. In this case, more is better. The Duette Architella provides a total R-Value of 7.86. Additionally, this redesigned product has a very good SHGC of .15.

By no means is the honeycomb shade your only alternative for an energy efficient window covering. We at Spectrum Window Design believe selecting the right window covering is a balance between function and fashion. Give us a call and we will be happy to show you products that save energy and look great too.

Good question. Spectrum Window Design has been providing window coverings in Denver for residents and businesses since 2003. After knocking on doors, spreading the word to friends and canvassing neighborhoods with fliers, the phone began to ring. The trick has been to keep the phone ringing.

Providing exceptional customer service has been foundation of our marketing strategy. We schedule sales appointments around our customer’s schedule, offer an extensive line of high quality products, are extremely knowledgeable about window coverings, provide prompt / competitive estimates, guarantee our measurements, provide professional installation, and promptly service any issues that might arise. People must like us because they tell their friends. Our business today is almost 100% referral based.

Why do we need a website?

Good question. We wanted to provide a resource for our customers to get a sense of who we are, how we operate, and the products we offer. We will also be sharing photos of our customers window treatments, testimonials, and tips for selecting the right products for your home.
