Adding Wood Blinds or Shutters to Enhance Your Interiors

  • When looking to add warmth and elegance to a home, many go to wood as a design element.  Windows in particular benefit from adding wood blinds or shutters.  At Spectrum, we’ve been installing wooden shutters and blinds in Denver for years and understand both their aesthetic appeal and their functional advantages.

The advantage of these window treatments go beyond the function of privacy and sun protection.  With so many products to choose from it may seem daunting, but it boils down to what suits the style of the home as well as its purpose.

    Shutters
Shutters are still a time honored option for interiors, available in virtually any color or finish.  Traditional shutters have small louvers, around 1 ½” or 2” wide,  Plantation shutters are made with the larger louvers, typically 3”or wider, and have a cleaner, more contemporary look.  Both offer insulation from heat and cold, light control, and are easy to clean.

Shutters are available in wood or faux wood styles, in painted or wood stains.  Almost any room in the house can be enhanced by shutters.  There are even styles to withstand humidity (not a big issue with Plantation Shutters in Denver), and custom shapes to fit odd windows.  While more costly than most window treatments, they will add value to the home, and are the only window treatment to be considered a capital improvement by the IRS.

Shutters come in many variations to complement a wide style of windows.  The openings can be split in half or in multiple panels vertically.  The panels can also be split horizontally to allow the top and bottom to be independent of each other.  Panels are hinged to allow for convenience in folding and stacking.  While shutters can be a do-it-yourself project, good installation is key to the longevity of the product so that all panels are level and thoroughly attached.

    Wood Blinds
If shutters do not fall into the budget, then wood blinds are an excellent alternative.  Available in wood or faux styles, there are numerous finishes to choose from in paint or stain, as well as custom finishes.  As with shutters, it is important to match the finish to the trim, creating consistency throughout the home.  Wood blinds come in several slat sizes as well, ranging 1” – 2 ½” wide.  A 2” slat is complementary to both traditional and modern interiors with a clean appearance and maximum light control.

Wooden blinds are also an excellent choice to add warmth and beauty to doors and windows.  They can be mounted inside or outside the casing, and ordered in custom sizes for the best fit.  They are available horizontally and vertically to allow for a number of hanging solutions.  Like shutters, wood blinds will benefit any room in the house.

Either type of window treatment will work well individually or with the addition of soft window treatments.  Valances, swags or simply panels can surround wood blinds easily, and add to their insulation capabilities.  Shutters do not need heavy coverings over them, but are enhanced by the addition of color and pattern.  When a room has numerous blinds or shutters, it is recommended to add some sort of fabric treatment to break up all the wood and soften the lines.
